< Go Back What to Know About Replastering Posted: May 1, 2021 What to Know About Replastering If you have just moved house or have lived somewhere a long time, you may need to replaster some damaged walls.
In this week’s blog at Everdells Plastering and Rendering Contractors we are looking at everything you need to know about replastering interior walls.
When Replastering is Necessary In a perfect world, old plasterwork should last for a very long time. However, it can become damaged if there are damp or structural issues. Some of the signs that a wall needs replastering include:
Cracked or Crumbing Surface Loose Sections Hollow Sound When Tapped
Repairing the damaged areas rather than redoing the entire walls is often enough to sort the problem as it tends to look worse than it is. If there are moisture issues that have caused the damage, damp treatments are not enough to undo the cracking or crumbling, so replastering is necessary.
Prepare the Walls Before any replastering takes place, you need to prepare the walls suitably. If this is not done correctly, the material may not bind as effectively to the surfaces. All the crumbling and cracked material needs to be removed. This can be done easily with a wall chisel and hammer.
Old wallpaper should be scraped away and skirting boards taken off. Skirting boards do not have to be taken out, but removing them makes the job a lot easier if the whole wall is being redone.
Once the walls are clear of deteriorated material, apply a base for the plaster. This can be something like diluted PVA or a primer painted on the walls. A skim coat can then be added by a professional once the primer is dry.
Hire Professionals Plastering is a skilled job, so if whole walls and ceilings need covering, it is always best to hire a specialist to do the work. If there are only a few patches to redo, you will probably be alright doing it yourself so long as you have prepared the surface effectively.
Consulting and booking a professional will ensure that the work is done to the highest standard and will last a very long time. If there are damp issues or you are unsure about any aspect of plastering, a specialist will be able to put your mind at ease. They have the skills and knowledge required to assist you.
